CENTERS

The Ira Nelson Horticulture Center was dedicated on November 1, 1960, as The Ornamental Horticulture Center and later renamed in honor of Professor Ira S. Nelson,
who was instrumental in its establishment. The Center's focus is on education, research, demonstration, and community outreach. In addition to serving the faculty and students of the Department of Renewable Resources, the center is utilized by numerous other departments on the UL Lafayette Campus, including the Wetlands Center.

The Model Sustainable Agricultural Complex (formerly Cade Farm) is approximately 15 miles from the main UL Lafayette campus. The 600-acre Complex accommodates numerous facilities in an integrated array, including a working dairy, a Crawfish Research Center (discussed below), and an equestrian arena, as well as production acreage for beef, sugar cane, and specialty crops. The landscape also includes natural habitat, nature trails, maintained wetlands, and housing for student residents. The Complex is used for research, education, demonstration and outreach in agriculture and sustainability. The Crawfish Research Center (CRC) was established in 1976. The CRC serves the regional aqua culture community through research, demonstration, outreach, and training. Activities center around the crawfish industry with ancillary work with finfish aqua culture (which is assuming greater significance in the area).

RESEARCH

Research in the Department of Renewable Resources addresses many aspects of human society, including food production, environmental protection, and community sustainability. Of keenest interest are research inquires that address multiple aspects of life, and the complex interrelationships among them.
